Youth Sunday 2022

September 25th,2022

Welcome and Announcements

Ella – Holy Happy Hour – September 30th 5:30-7:30, SandHills Brewery. Let Karen know if you need childcare.
Fall Fest – October 9th – Music, food, fun, fellowship.

Remember back to your childhood, books like Green eggs and Ham.
Boxes, foxes, goats and boats and of course there is Sam- I-Am.
He asks and he asks, with a push and a prod.
Perhaps Sam I am is the persistent pursuer just like our God.
Sit back and enjoy as we worship today.
We will sing and rejoice and to God we will pray.

Joyful ReBELLion – Prelude

Call to Worship: – Griffin —
Please join in reading responsively (pause)

One: WE come to this place from all kinds of places.
ALL: We bring our hearts and our minds and our faces.
One: We’ve come from near and we’ve come from far.
ALL: We’ve come just the way that we are.
One: And while the words might be amusing. We know they will not be everyone’s choosing.
The style will be different and before we begin it. WE have to make sure that we put our hears in it.
ALL: And so we gather this gathering in a gatherly way. To sing and to laugh and to dance and to pray.

Hymn of Praise: Come Now is the Time to Worship.

Prayer of Confession:
Elliott:  Let us join our voices together in prayer. (pause)

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open wide.
All of our want-wanting in you we confide
and from you our secrets we just cannot hide.

God we have wronged you, and we need to say boo-ho,
for the things that we did and that we did not do.
We are not content,
we want to repent,
one hundred percent.

Oh so sorry we say, won’t you forgive us this day,
so that we can walk in the light of your way. Amen

Words of Assurance – Ava

All Powerful God have mercy on yous,
And forget the sins of we Whos.
Keep you from and all strife
And lead you into new life.

Assurance response – Glory to God Whose Goodness shines on me (this is the jazzy one)

Ava:   We are forgiven, we can all shout hooray.
As we gather together on this blessed day.
With handshakes or hugs let us greet one another
As Children of God and as sisters and brothers.

Passing of the Peace

Scripture: Exodus 3:1- 14 – Moses asks God for God’s name. Hannah, Tate, Griffin, Emma
Skit – Sam-I-Am and Guy-Am-I

Exodus 3:1-14

The Message

1-2 Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the west end of the wilderness and came to the mountain of God, Horeb. The angel of God appeared to him in flames of fire blazing out of the middle of a bush. He looked. The bush was blazing away but it didn’t burn up.

Moses said, “What’s going on here? I can’t believe this! Amazing! Why doesn’t the bush burn up?”

God saw that he had stopped to look. God called to him from out of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

He said, “Yes? I’m right here!”

God said, “Don’t come any closer. Remove your sandals from your feet. You’re standing on holy ground.”

Then he said, “I am the God of your father: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.”  Moses hid his face, afraid to look at God..

9-10      God said, “The Israelite cry for help has come to me, and I’ve seen for myself how cruelly they’re being treated by the Egyptians. It’s time for you to go back: I’m sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the People of Israel, out of Egypt.”

11 Moses answered God, “But why me? What makes you think that I could ever go to Pharaoh and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

12 “I’ll be with you,” God said. “And this will be the proof that I am the one who sent you: When you have brought my people out of Egypt, you will worship God right here at this very mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the People of Israel and I tell them, ‘The God of your fathers sent me to you’; and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What do I tell them?”

14 God said to Moses, “I-AM-WHO-I-AM. Tell the People of Israel, ‘I-AM sent me to you.’”

Sam:       I AM SAM. I AM SAM. SAM I AM. WOULD YOU LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM?

Guy        I DO NOT LIKE THEM,SAM-I-AM. I DO NOT LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM.

Sam:       WOULD YOU, COULD YOU, ON A BOAT?

Guy:       I COULD NOT, WOULD NOT, ON A BOAT.

I WILL NOT, WILL NOT, WITH A GOAT.

I WILL NOT EAT THEM IN THE RAIN.

NOT IN THE DARK! NOT IN A TREE!

NOT IN A CAR! YOU LET ME BE!

I DO NOT LIKE THEM IN A BOX.

I DO NOT LIKE THEM WITH A FOX.

I WILL NOT EAT THEM IN A HOUSE.

I DO NOT LIKE THEM WITH A MOUSE.

I DO NOT LIKE THEM HERE OR THERE.

I DO NOT LIKE THEM ANYWHERE!

I DO NOT LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM!

I DO NOT LIKE THEM, SAM-I-AM.

Narrator:         For almost the entire book, Sam-I-Am wants to get Guy-Am-I to try Green Eggs and ham. Guy-Am-I refuses each time. Sam-I-Am will not be ignored. I wonder how Sam-I-Am is like the great I AM from the Exodus story? Moses tries to make excuses about why he can’t go ask Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go and I AM WHO I AM keeps reassuring Moses that he is the right person.

Think about a time when the GREAT I AM has continued to pursue you even though you come up with excuses why you can’t do something.

John 6: 35, 48-51 Ava, Ella, Elliott

Skit – Green Eggs and Ham – The bread of life- Communion, fed by Christ

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Guy:       SAM! IF YOU LET ME BE, I WILL TRY THEM. YOU WILL SEE.

(... and he tries them ...)
SAY! I LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM! I DO! I LIKE THEM, SAM-I-AM!
AND I WOULD EAT THEM IN A BOAT. AND I WOULD EAT THEM WITH A GOAT...
AND I WILL EAT THEM, IN THE RAIN. AND IN THE DARK. AND ON A TRAIN.
AND IN A CAR. AND IN A TREE. THEY ARE SO GOOD, SO GOOD, YOU SEE!
SO I WILL EAT THEM IN A BOX. AND I WILL EAT THEM WITH A FOX.
AND I WILL EAT THEM IN A HOUSE. AND I WILL EAT THEM WITH A MOUSE.
AND I WILL EAT THEM HERE AND THERE. SAY! I WILL EAT THEM ANYWHERE!
I DO SO LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM! THANK YOU! THANK YOU, SAM I AM.

Narrator:         When we gather for Communion, we are invited to eat of the Body of Christ.
The pastor takes the bread and says

On the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took the bread and after giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them saying “This is my body broken for you, take, eat in remembrance of me.”

Jesus, the bread of life, is given to us each time we take communion. Every time we take communion, we can think about how Jesus gave his life for us and how we are spiritually fed when we eat together.

Just as Sam-I-Am keeps asking Guy-Am-I to eat Green Eggs and Ham, we are continually offered the Bread of Life.

Joyful ReBELLION – 2nd piece

Time for Children – Karen

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5: 14-20 – Made new in Christ, now ambassadors for Christ Ben/Aidan
SKit – Persistence, Share the Good news with one and all.

2 Corinthians 5: 14-20 (The Message)

14-15 Our firm decision is to work from this focused center: One man died for everyone. That puts everyone in the same boat. He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own.

16-20 Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life emerges! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.

Youth – gather at the front of the steps – facing the chancel

Guy: – (after trying Green Eggs and Ham) goes from one person to the next to ask them to eat it too.)

Will you try Green Eggs and Ham?! (say this to everyone)

To the whole group (and congregation) – I was once like you. I didn’t want to try them either. I tried to run away, but Sam-I-Am kept following me. Honestly, I only tried them to get rid of him, but guess what? When I tried them, they were amazing! I can’t get enough of them now.

That is why I want everyone to try them. I think each of you will have the kind of experience I did. You will try them and you will be hooked! Sure, other foods still taste good, but when I am feeling super happy or when I am feeling super sad, I go have Green Eggs and Ham. They help me celebrate and they cheer me up too. I know, that no matter how I am feeling, Green Eggs and Ham is the perfect thing.

Really, you should try them. Try them. I may have to send Sam-I-Am your way.

Hymn – 319 Shout to the North

Invitation to Discipleship
Prayers of the Church Tate –

Prayer
We pray for the world and all of creation,
Save it from damage and devastation.
Give us the strength to clean up the place
And use our resources with wisdom and grace.
In this place and on this day…(Hear our voices as we pray).

We pray for the church, more than windows and steeples,
We pray for its work and we pray for its peoples.
We pray for the outreach, the needs that it’s meeting.
We pray for the folks doing clothing and feeding
And bringing compassion and comfort and care,
To places where folks feel like no one is there
In this place on this day….

We pray for our leaders both lay and ordained.
May their courage be strong and their spirits sustained.
Keep our elders, deacons, and pastors in your care.
Bless their work and their rest and their study and prayer.
In this place on this day….

We pray for those folks whose ends don’t seem to meet,
And people who don’t have enough food to eat.
We pray for the homeless who sleep in the cold.
We pray for the young and we pray for the old.
We pray for people whose health may be failing,
Especially for those of our friends who are ailing.
In this place and on this day….

With both mind and heart we offer our prayer
and close with the one that Jesus did share…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Everything that’s done through you,

becomes refreshed and made anew.
Take the gifts that we have brought,

these simple things, or so we thought
and do the things that you do to them,

May your love be know through them.
And remember, just the same,
we bring ourselves in Jesus’ name. Amen
