Worship at Southminster is the center of our community ministry. Through worship we affirm the inclusive love of God, which is made known through Jesus Christ. We come together as the Body of Christ to hear and proclaim the inspired word of God through active participation, sacred music, and the spoken word.

Music ministry is highly regarded and appreciated at Southminster. We strive for excellence and beauty through choral and instrumental music in our worship and greater community offerings. From prelude to postlude, our music ministry seeks to transcend the ordinary and bring us into the presence of God.

Worship at Southminster is the heartbeat of our life together.
Every week, we are gathered together as the body of Christ. We hear and proclaim the inspired Word of God. We pray for and with the world. And then we are sent back out to love God and serve our neighbors.

Southminster also holds special worship services throughout the year including: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve.

Your First Visit

A great way to get to know Southminster is to join us for worship on Sunday! As you plan your visit, here’s what you can expect.

What is worship like at Southminster?

Our services include prayer, music, scripture readings, and a sermon. Our worship services might be described as traditional in nature, meaning we usually read our prayers from a bulletin, sing our hymns from a hymnal accompanied by an organ, and the pastor wears a robe (sometimes). Our 8:30am service is an intimate and relaxed service in the chapel, while our 11:00 service includes the choir and special music offerings, opportunities for children’s participation, and an expanded liturgy.

Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month and everyone is welcome to participate. Baptism is celebrated upon request. Please email the pastor, Rev. Caroline Barnett, if you are interested in being baptized or having your child baptized.

When do you worship?

We worship at 8:30am and 11:00am on Sunday mornings. The 11am service is also live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook and can be watched live or viewed anytime after 11am. During the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend), we worship with a single service at 10:00am in the sanctuary.

If worship is traditional, does that mean I need to dress up?

Not at all! While our worship is traditional in nature, we are a relaxed group of people, and you are welcome to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

Are kids welcome in worship?

Yes! Children are welcome and encouraged to attend worship. Worship bags with activities for children are available in the lounge outside the sanctuary. Following the “Good News for Everyone, But Especially Children,” kids ages 3 – 5 are welcome to attend Godly Play, our children’s church ministry, and may be picked up at the end of the service. Our nursery, staffed with two workers, is open from 9:00am – 12:00pm for children up to 3 years old.

What else goes on at Southminster on Sunday mornings?

From 9:30 – 10:30 am, we have faith exploration classes for children, youth, and adults. The adult class topic varies from week to week, and often includes Bible studies, guest speakers, and discussions about current events. The youth and children classes provide age-appropriate opportunities to learn about the Christian faith through storytelling, arts and crafts, and play.

Between the two services, different church groups rotate hosting a coffee hour for socializing. If you’d like to make a new friend, stop by for a cup of coffee and a snack after or before worship.

I still have questions…

Great! We love questions. We hope you’ll stop by and try us out. We can tell you more about ourselves in-person. But if you have a specific question, you can email Rev. Caroline Barnett and she’d love to connect.
